Chelsea signs French international Cristopher Nkunku from Leipzig - can disaster be avoided?

Chelsea announced the signing of French international Cristopher Nkunku from Germany Bundesliga club RB Leipzig. Nkunku was signed with a 6 year contract, allegedly for “only” £52 million.

But are we about to witness a disaster?

In theory, no.

Nkunku was one of the best players of the German league for the last 2 years.

In particular, the 21-22 seasong was excellent. He scored 35 goals in all competitions, was selected Bundesliga Player of the Season and German PFA Player of the Season. He helped his team win the DFB-Pokal too. Overall, very impressive.

Last season, he continued his good form, scoring 23 goals to help Leipzig achieve a third-place finish in the Bundesliga and retain the DFB-Pokal.

Nkunku has also played with the French national squad, appearing 25 times. He had been called to the World Cup Squad in Qatar 2022, but unfortunately was injured in training before the event and replaced with Randal Kolo Muani.

It’s not Nkunku, it’s Chelsea.

If all goes well, Nkunku has potential to be one of the best signings for Chelsea under Todd Boehly.

Seeing how Boehly’s signings have performed so far, there is potential for disaster. Arguably, none of Boehly’s signings has proven to be succesful intil now.

What do you think? Will Nkunku retain or improve his form at Chelsea? Or will he underperform?
